Fishing and Fishing Impacts Work Programme Information Pack

We are pleased to present you with our Fishing and Fishing Impacts Work Programme Information Pack to assist and provide iwi entities with more insight into commercial fishing methods.

It is our hope that these resources will provide you with the information required to enable more evidence-based and balanced discussion internally amongst your entities; and externally with iwi members who may be questioning iwi involvement in commercial fishing.

A summary outlining the purpose and context of each component within the information pack can be found below.

Te Kawa o Te Moana Analysis Framework and Paper Structure

Our Te Kawa o Te Moana Framework provides the foundation for the information pack, drawing on Ngā Tohu o Te Ora to guide our analysis. This paper structure sets out how each tohu will be explored in relation to fishing, supporting a holistic consideration of this kaupapa through a Te Kawa o Te Moana lens.

Types of Trawling Conducted by Moana New Zealand and Sealord (Report)

The ‘Types of Trawling Conducted by Moana New Zealand and Sealord’ report has been developed as a “101” resource on bottom-contact fishing methods, in response to requests from iwi for accessible technical information about bottom trawling and other bottom contact fishing methods used by our kāhui.

The purpose of the report is to support a shared understanding of the science and technical aspects of these methods, providing a foundation for informed kōrero and consideration of bottom contact fishing. F.L.O.W. Collaborative was engaged to support the development of this resource.

Key Messages

The Key Messages resource is a practical tool to support kōrero about bottom trawling. It brings together key facts, messages and “back-pocket” statements developed within the context of the Fisheries Settlement. The resource can be used to help guide discussions and communicate key points about bottom trawling in a clear and consistent way. These Key Messages have been reviewed and informed by both Moana New Zealand and Sealord Group Limited.

History of the Māori Fisheries Settlement and History of the QMS Paper

This paper provides historical context on the development of the Māori Fisheries Settlement and the Quota Management System (QMS), helping to explain how the current fisheries framework came to be. It was developed in response t requests from iwi, for a resource that explains how the current fisheries framework has developed and the historical context behind it.
